Halloween Reading - H.P. Lovecraft - Mongolia

“I have an odd craving to whisper about those few frightful hours in that ill-rumored and evilly-shadowed seaport of death and blasphemous abnormality. The mere telling helps me to restore confidence in my own faculties; to reassure myself that I was not the first to succumb to a contagious nightmare hallucination. It helps me, too, in making up my mind regarding a certain terrible step which lies ahead of me...”

--H.P. Lovecraft, “The Shadow over Innsmouth”

“The Shadow over Innsmouth”

In the shunned New England seaport town of Innsmouth, something is very much not right, as one unfortunate traveller discovers on one unforgettable night.

Written and published in 1936 during the worldwide Great Depression, this popular and provocative classic of cosmic horror treats themes of economic collapse and desperation, miscegenation, racism, fear of the foreign, and humanity's wilful though perhaps necessary misinterpretation of the nature of the universe and our own role within it.

The subject of ever-increasing academic and mainstream attention, H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) stands as the most influential American horror writer since Edgar Allan Poe.

Radigan Neuhalfen is the author of the novel The Steppe and the blog The Crush of All Things.

Hip Hop in Mongolia

"Hi
"My name is Ronald and I am a college student in New York City. I came across your blog and I am writing to you because I am writing a paper for a scholarship competition that gives students a chance to travel to another country. I want to go to Mongolia and study what effects the Hip Hop culture has on the Mongolian political culture. I would like to know if you can give me some information Hip Hop artists in Mongolia. If not, do you know anybody who would know about this topic?
"Thank You"

Alert From Mongolia

Message from Konchog:

"Hello everyone,

"I'm writing to all my friends who are in some way connected to Mongolia. As I'm sure you're aware, the Mongolian herders and animals are suffering through an unusually terrible dzud this year. Today, Shambhala Sun was kind enough to publish a guest post of mine on the subject and feature it on their front page. I hope you might take a moment to read it, and help spread the word to those who care about our friends in the countryside who are really struggling now. I've been soliciting funds for the Cambridge Mongolian Development Appeal (CAMDA), who are on the ground in Mongolia providing direct relief right now, but you may have another organization you support. In any case, it's urgent, so thank you for listening and telling your friends. There are some more details at my blog (link below) and that's where I'll post CAMDA updates.

"All the best to you,

"Konchog

like the despairing sounds of futile existence

"Short films are lithe and trim athletes; TV series and feature films, meanwhile, are colossal lardarses: their bodies great acres of blubber, their pendulous jowls resembling saggy, blue-veined buttocks, their limbs ever-shifting oceans of lumpy porridge, their sugar-encrusted maws forever agape as they release low, continuous bellows directed at the heavens like the despairing sounds of futile existence."

Urangoo Baatarkhuyag needs helps to fight leukemia

"Urangoo Baatarkhuyag was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on Sept 5, 2009. She came to Provo, Utah from Mongolia when she was just 18 years old to attend Utah Valley University. A little less than a year ago, she was awarded a Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Drafting and graduated with honors....

"The blood test results showed leukemia cancer cells spread in the blood stream and deteriorated her immunity. After chemotherapy treatments during these last few days at the LDS hospital in Salt Lake City, the cancerous cells are still found active and further damaged the chromosomes. She is predicted to live few months unless she undergoes an immediate bone marrow transplant which is an extremely expensive procedure....

"She has about 60% survival rate if the procedure is carried out. Our goal is to raise $350,000 to cover the initial cost. She needs our help and generosity to live and smile again. Please, give her the gift of life and donate what you can; every dollar will count and make a difference. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity."

Ways to Celebrate Halloween

"Egg or toilet paper your own house, then, stand outside and angrily blame it on every innocent person who walks by.

"Gather some friends and go Halloween caroling. Instead of singing Christmas songs, knock on doors and try out an A cappella version of Cypress Hill's 'Insane In The Brain.'

"Wait at home for trick or treaters and instead of giving out candy, hold out a big bowl filled with some delicious punch. They have no cups! What are they gonna do without cups? Hilarious."

if you ponder

"You can't appreciate the beauty of a rose if you ponder that the color red is just the brain's interpretation of a specific wavelength of light with crests that are roughly 700 nanometers apart."

and with the Nordic Cross on the flag

"The Global Peace Index ranks Norway as the most peaceful country in the world. Every year for half a decade, Norway has ranked number one in standard of living, life expectancy, literacy, and education. The unemployment rate is half that of America, its crime rate is low, and it has the second highest gross domestic product.

"Norway is a model country. Yet more than 70 percent of its population claim to be either atheist or agnostic. Only 26 percent of Norway’s population believe in God.

"Norway had Christian roots, even more so than the United States whose Founding Fathers purposely left religion out of the Constitution. But Norway has shed its religious upbringing and has become one of the safest, most progressive, and most peaceful countries in the world."

decided I couldn't post this in either The Crush or Adventuria

My friend Mike and I have a 14-year ongoing dispute over religion. He's atheist; I'm agnostic. I visited Mike in Boston last autumn. I arrived late on a Saturday night, and as we rode through the city in a taxi, Mike told me that he had to get up early the next morning to attend the weekly meeting of his atheist group. I said, "What?" He told me, yes, he's a member of an atheist group that meets every week, and I was invited to come along. I said, "You go to church? You're an atheist! The best part about being atheist is that you don't have to get up on Sunday morning and go to church! So you blow that all to hell by going to atheist church? Whoever heard of such a thing? And you want me to go with you? Goddamnit Mike, of all the people I know, you were the last person I ever expected to push their religion on me." But I went; the atheists met in a bar so at least we got to drink.

Capucine's Library in Mongolia through Edurelief

"With hundreds (literally) of blogs, and even national newspapers covering Capucine's story it's easy to see that people are completely taken by her. Don't believe us? Read this story by the National Post or simply look at the results in Google, Twitter, or Vimeo.

"Anne (Capucine's mother) and Capucine have decided to put her talents and fame to good use by helping children in Mongolia receive a better education. They have created a series of t-shirts, buttons, magnets, and postcards (coming) featuring the amazing world of Capucine. All the proceeds from these sales go to benefit 'Capucine's Library,' an idea we dreamt up with Anne where donations and sales from her merchandise would go towards one specific project reaching several hundred children in Mongolia. She's even made a special video especially for her project. We will track her progress and provide photos, films, and the results of her project. If you want to support Capucine and her library you can order from the links above or make a dedicated donation. In less than two months, Capucine has already raised over $2,000 for her library."

Cracked's Inauguration Coverage

"Some people say that Obama is unrealistic and overly optimistic. Not so says Obama. In his address, Obama seeks only to 'harness the sun.'"

"Now THERE'S some super-science I can stand behind. Fuck Kennedy's moon landing shit. We're going to literally RIDE THE SUN LIKE A HORSE. Godspeed, you doomed astronauts."

Russia

"Russia has never once in a thousand years transferred power between rival political factions by means of an election. Russia is still singing the music of the anthem of the USSR, a totally failed state that caused the deaths of far more Russians than all the country's foreign enemies combined."
